The practical benefits of filing your ITR

An accurate, timely income-tax return is more than a yearly formality—it creates an organised record of income and taxes.

Filing enables eligible taxpayers to report income correctly and claim a refund when excess tax has been paid or deducted.

Eligible losses may be carried forward only when the legal conditions and filing timelines are met. The applicable return form and disclosures depend on the taxpayer's circumstances.

E-verification completes the filing process. The Income Tax Department states that an unverified return is treated as invalid.

A consistent tax record can support financial documentation, although approval of a loan, visa or any other application is never guaranteed.
